Carry-On Dimensions

• Standard Max Dimensions: 55cm x 40cm x 23cm.
• Important Exception: If you are flying on the smaller Q300 aircraft (often used for regional domestic flights), the depth of your bag must not exceed 22cm (8.7″).

What counts as a personal item?
In addition to your main bag, you can bring one small personal item. This includes a handbag, a slim laptop sleeve, a duty-free bag, or a small camera bag. This item must fit under the seat in front of you.

Your checked baggage allowance depends entirely on the fare bundle you purchased.

Weight and Size Limits

• Maximum Weight: 23kg (50lb) per bag.
• Maximum Size: 158cm (62″) in total linear dimensions (length + width + height).

Checked Bag Allowances by Fare Type

• Seat Only: 0 checked bags.
• Seat + Bag: 1 checked bag.
• Flexi Change: 1 checked bag.
• Flexi Refund: 2 checked bags.
• The Works / Works Flexi: 1 checked bag (2 bags for flights to Honolulu).
• Economy (Long Haul): 1 checked bag (Exceptions: 2 bags for flights from Australia to USA/Canada, or flights to Shanghai/Singapore/Taipei).
• Premium Economy: 2 checked bags.
• Business Premier: 3 checked bags.

Oversized and Overweight Baggage

If your bag exceeds the standard limits, Air New Zealand will charge excess fees. It is almost always cheaper to repack into an extra bag than to pay for an overweight item.

Overweight Bags (23kg – 32kg)

If your bag weighs more than 23kg (50lb) but less than 32kg (70lb), you will be charged an overweight fee at the airport.

• Important: For health and safety reasons, no single bag can weigh more than 32kg (70lb). If it exceeds this, it must be sent as cargo.

Oversized Bags (>158cm)

If your bag's total dimensions are greater than 158cm (62″), it is considered oversized.

• Sports Equipment: Items like bikes, surfboards, and skis can often count as one of your standard checked bags if they are under 2.0m long and 23kg. If they exceed these limits, excess fees apply. Items over 2.5m usually cannot be accepted on jet aircraft.

Excess Baggage Fees: Prepaid vs. Airport

One of the biggest mistakes travelers make is waiting until the airport to pay for extra luggage.

Prepaid Extra Bags
You can purchase extra bags online up to 30 minutes before a domestic flight and 90 minutes before an international flight.

• Domestic Prepaid: ~$30 NZD for the first extra bag.

Airport Excess Fees
If you pay at the check-in counter, the fees are much higher.

Traveling with Pets

• International: Pets cannot travel as checked baggage on international flights; they must travel as cargo via an approved pet transporter.
