Vietjet Air Baggage Policy (2026): Carry-On, Checked Bags & Fees

Official Source Verified · October 21, 2026

The Vietjet Air baggage policy is built around one idea: the ticket price covers you and a 7 kg cabin bag, and almost everything else is sold separately. That makes Vietjet one of the cheapest ways to fly around Vietnam and Southeast Asia — as long as you decide what you are packing before you book, not at the check-in desk in Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi.

This guide breaks the rules down by fare, shows when a higher fare is cheaper than adding bags, and explains the weighing practices that catch most first-time Vietjet passengers.

Vietjet Carry-On Rules: The 7 kg Limit

Every Vietjet ticket, including the cheapest Eco fare, includes free cabin baggage made up of one main bag up to 56 x 36 x 23 cm and one small personal item up to 40 x 30 x 10 cm, such as a laptop bag or handbag. The important detail is that the 7 kg limit covers both items together, not each one.

In practice, a typical hard-shell cabin suitcase weighs 2.5–3.5 kg empty. Add a 1.5 kg laptop bag and you have roughly 2–3 kg left for clothes. If you travel with a laptop, a soft duffel or backpack as your main bag gives you noticeably more usable weight.

Does Vietjet weigh cabin bags?

Yes, and more consistently than most full-service airlines in the region. Bags are weighed at check-in and spot-checked again at the boarding gate, especially on busy domestic routes between Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City. A bag over 7 kg at the gate is taken from you and checked at the airport excess rate, which is the most expensive way to pay for baggage on Vietjet.

What should stay in your cabin bag

  • Power banks and spare lithium batteries — they are not allowed in checked baggage. Power banks above 160 Wh are not accepted at all.
  • Liquids in containers of 100 ml or less, all in one clear resealable bag of about 1 liter, on international flights.
  • Medication, documents and valuables, which airlines limit their liability for in the hold.

Knives, scissors with blades, tools and anything flammable must go in checked baggage or be left at home. For how cabin limits compare across airlines, see our carry-on size chart by airline.

Vietjet Checked Baggage Allowance

Vietjet uses a weight system for checked luggage: you buy (or your fare includes) a total weight in kilograms, and you can split it across several bags. Two rules apply to every bag:

  • No single bag may weigh more than 32 kg, regardless of how much allowance you bought. A 40 kg allowance means at least two bags.
  • Each bag must fit within 119 x 119 x 81 cm. Anything larger is treated as special or oversized baggage.

Eco fares include no checked baggage at all. Deluxe includes 20 kg, SkyBoss 30 kg and SkyBoss Business 40 kg on most routes. Baggage packages can be bought in steps from 15 kg up to 40 kg (and higher on some international routes).

When a higher fare beats adding bags

Because Deluxe bundles a 20 kg bag with other extras (free seat selection on many routes and more flexible changes), the price gap between Eco + a 20 kg package and a Deluxe fare is often small. Before paying for a bag separately, compare the two totals on the booking screen. If you need more than 20 kg or travel with golf clubs, SkyBoss is frequently the cheaper option overall.

How Much Does Vietjet Extra Baggage Cost?

Vietjet does not publish one fixed price list: the cost of a baggage package depends on the route, the currency and how far in advance you buy. What does not change is the order of prices:

When you buyHow it is pricedRelative cost
During bookingFixed weight package (15–40 kg)Lowest
Later online or in the appSame packages, usually higherMedium
At the airportCharged per kilogram of excessHighest — often around double the online package

Domestic Vietnamese routes are cheaper than international ones for the same weight, and larger packages cost less per kilogram than small ones. If you think you need 18 kg, buying the 20 kg package online is almost always cheaper than taking 15 kg and paying for the extra 3 kg at the counter.

How to add baggage after booking

  1. Open Manage Booking on vietjetair.com or in the Vietjet app and enter your reservation code.
  2. Choose the baggage option for each passenger and each flight (outbound and return are sold separately).
  3. Select the weight package, pay, and check that the new allowance appears on your updated itinerary.

Online baggage sales close a few hours before departure — generally around three hours. After that cut-off the airport counter is your only option.

Sports Equipment and Special Baggage

Golf bags, bicycles, surfboards, skis and large musical instruments are accepted as special baggage, but they need to be declared and paid for in advance so the airline can plan hold space. Bicycles generally have to be boxed with the handlebars turned and pedals removed. SkyBoss fares include a golf set on many routes, which can make them cheaper than paying for the equipment separately.

Strollers and car seats for infants are usually accepted at the gate. Check the conditions for your route when booking, especially on international flights.

How to Avoid Paying Excess Baggage on Vietjet

  • Weigh both cabin items together at home. The 7 kg limit is combined, and the gate is where it is enforced.
  • Buy checked weight during booking, rounding up to the next package rather than down.
  • Compare Eco + bag against Deluxe or SkyBoss before paying for baggage separately.
  • Split heavy loads into two bags to stay under the 32 kg single-bag limit.
  • Check partner rules on connections. If you continue on another airline, its limits may be stricter; compare with our Vietnam Airlines baggage guide and AirAsia baggage guide.

Lost or Damaged Bags

Report a missing or damaged bag at the Vietjet baggage service desk in the arrivals hall before you leave the airport, and ask for a Property Irregularity Report (PIR). Keep your baggage tag, boarding pass and the PIR reference number; claims are far harder to make once you have left the baggage hall.
